What kind of engines does Grady-White use on their boats?

Grady-White uses the latest four stroke outboard technology from the Yamaha Motor Corporation. Grady-White has chosen to partner with Yamaha Marine because of their superior performance, consistent quality, and terrific technology over the years.
Our factory technicians will pre-rig and install your choice of Yamaha four stroke engines. How do I keep my brightwork looking good?
|
|
|
|
Aluminum--Wash with mild soap and water (ex. Ivory liquid) after each use and every 2-3 weeks that the boat is left outside in a marine environment. Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaning products as they can remove the anodized coating which will cause pitting. Pay special attention to the upper tubes of a hardtop or t-top. These areas do not benefit from rainwater which will naturally help rinse off salt residue.
Stainless Steel--See info above. Can also polish with Flitz metal polish.
After cleaning, coat all metal parts and hardware with a non-abrasive metal protector such as Boeshield’s T9 or Aluma Gard. These products displace moisture and leave a waxy film that will protect the surface from salt and other contaminants such as acid rain.
NOTE: Do not use abrasive cleaning polishes or products such as pads, steel wool, or steel brushes on anodized aluminum parts as they will damage the finish.

How do I restore the look of my boat’s simulated wood-grain Duratrim?
|
|
|
|
On our older model boats, after years of exposure to the elements, the Duratrim simulated wood-grain trim may begin to fade. There is a product on the market called Penetrol that is excellent for restoring the faded Duratrim. Simply apply a small amount, allow to dry for a few minutes, and wipe off excess with a clean rag. You may need to repeat the process or allow the Duratrim to soak overnight if it is really weathered. Penetrol is available in most hardware and paint stores nationwide. Are lockable fuel fills available for my boat?
|
|
|
|
Since the 1997 model year, we have been using Perko vented fuel fills on our boats. Until now, these fuel fills were not lockable. Perko has introduced a lockable insert that fits directly into the existing fuel fill on your Grady-White. Please note that the insert available fits 1997 to current model Grady-White boats. They can be purchased at most marine retailers such as Boaters World or West Marine. Ask for Perko Part # 0525DP0BLK used with fuel fill #0541.

Can I use 10% Ethanol Fuel in my Grady-White boat?
|
|
|
|
Recently there has been a great deal of interest in E10 Ethanol fuel or RFG Reformulated Gasoline. The use of this blended gasoline is growing. RFG is gasoline mixed with up to 10% grain alcohol or ethanol. This type of fuel burns hotter and cleaner which is better for the environment and makes us less dependent on foreign oil. There are some things you need to be aware of if you use these types of fuel:
If possible, it is best not to mix older type MTBE or non-ethanol fuel with ethanol fuel. In some locations E85 fuel has become available. Current outboard engines are not compatible with E85 fuel and it should not be used.
Ethanol acts as a solvent and causes any water, dirt debris or sludge build-up in your fuel tank to mix with gas. If any of these items enter into your fuel system from the gas tank, it could clog filters quickly and even get into your engine. We recommend installing new fuel filters before changing to ethanol fuel. 10 micron fuel filters have been developed by many outboard engine manufacturers to aid in the filtration process. When using RFG, it is more important than ever to check the fuel filters as part of your routine maintenance and replace them when necessary. Prepare ahead and have a couple of fuel filters on board. Lastly, RFG has a shorter shelf life compared to normal gasoline. It important to add non alcohol fuel stabilizers with every tank of fresh fuel.
For long term storage and winterization, Grady-White recommends storing your boat with a full tank of fuel. This will reduce the amount of water vapor in the tank and therefore reduce the amount of water in the fuel. Be careful not to over fill the tank, this could cause fuel spillage through the deck air vent as temperatures increase in the spring.
Recently, there have been reports in the media about ethanol fuel damaging fiberglass fuel tanks. This situation does not apply to Grady-White Boats; we have never used fiberglass fuel tanks. In addition, all Grady-White fuel system components (hoses, fittings) are compatible with E10 ethanol fuel.

Parts and accessories for current boat models can be purchased by contacting your nearest Grady-White dealership. You can find the dealer nearest to you by using the dealer locator found near the top of this page. Your dealer can also assist with parts for older models, although original parts for some older models may no longer be available. In these cases your dealer usually can recommend a suitable replacement part. West Marine(www.westmarine.com)and Boat US (www.boatus-store.com)are also great sources for older replacement parts.

How can I repair minor scratches in my gel coat?
|
|

Grady-White has a gel coat repair kit available to fix minor scratches. The gel is a custom color to match the existing Grady-White gel coat. The kit comes complete with the gel coat paste, catalyst, and detailed application instructions. Please keep in mind that on older boats, due to gel coat oxidation, there may be a slight variance in color between the boat gel color and the repair kit. The part number for the kit is 30-029 and it can be purchased directly from your local Grady-White dealer. Local dealer information can be found on the homepage by selecting the “Find Dealer” tab.

Can I repower my older Grady-White with new four stroke power?
|
|
|
|
The three most important factors to consider when repowering an older Grady-White with four stroke power are:
1) engine weight,
2) engine centers on twin engine applications and
3) maintenance of the boat.
Older Grady-White boats were designed for the lighter two stroke engines available at the time. Before purchasing the heavier four stroke engines, we recommend simulating the additional weight of the four stroke engine(s), while the boat is at rest in the water, to see how the additional weight affects the waterline of the boat.
On older twin engines boats, the two stroke engines are mounted on 26” centers. This means there is 26” inches in between the midpoint of the location of where each engine is mounted on the transom. Because the engine block and cowlings of the four-strokes are wider, the engines must be mounted further apart: 28 ½” for transom mounted engines and 29” for twin engine bracketed boats. Engine centers do not apply to single engine installations.
Even with the best maintained boat, it is good practice to have a qualified marine technician administer the installation of any engine repower. How do I activate the Sirius Satellite Radio System?
|

|
|
1. To activate the Sirius Satellite Radio system contact Sirius by phone at 1-888-539-7474 or on line at www.sirius.com by selecting the “Activate” tab.
a) Turn your Sirius tuner on and tune it to channel 184. Channel 184 is the Sirius pre-view channel and system information may also be obtained there.
b) The unit’s ESN (Electronic Serial Number) will be needed. This number is attached to the owner’s manual provided with the unit.
c) This number may also be obtained from the menu screen of the stereo. This is a moving display so be ready to record the ESN quickly. You may have to run the display several times to record the number.
d) As part of your purchase of this system from Grady-White, you will receive six months of service from the date of activation.
2. Sirius channels can be pre-set just like an AM/FM radio.
a) The system offers four bands with the capacity for 24 pre-sets.
b) The unit offers the user a choice of “standard tuning” and “pre-set tuning”.
c) To use the stereo’s dash mounted remote pad for pre-set selections, the tuner must be set on “pre-set”.
3. Programming guides are available for downloading on the Sirius web-site www.sirius.com . Click on the FAQ’s tab and review question #1 “What is Sirius”.

What type of trailer should I purchase for my Grady-White?
|

Grady-White boats are constructed for strength and durability. Either bunk or roller type trailers can be used with our hulls. We recommend choosing whichever type trailer you feel most comfortable using. Your dealer can assist with the decision making process. The trailer should be properly rated for the loaded weight of your boat. It should also be set up correctly for the contour of the hull bottom. What is level flotation and basic flotation?
|
|
|
|
Level flotation means that if a boat was to take on water and become swamped it would stay in an upright position in calm seas. The US Coast Guard requires that all boats under 20 feet in length provide level flotation. The US Coast Guard tests and certifies boats under 20 feet to ensure level flotation requirements are met. There are no flotation requirements for boats 20 feet and over, yet Grady-White models of these lengths provide "basic flotation." Basic flotation means that if the boat was to become swamped there still would be a portion above the waterline that you would be able to hold on to until help arrives. We all understand the importance of safety; that's why Grady-White boats are unsinkable.
