Safe boating begins with preparation. Before you leave the dock, make sure you file a float plan with someone you trust, and remember to include a recent photo of your boat as well. This boat safety checklist is a great tool to use and review before every trip.

One of the simplest ways to ensure safety aboard your boat is by wearing the correct life jacket. It is crucial to have well-fitting PFDs (personal flotation devices) on board at all times. However, accidents can happen in an instant, so we recommend that you and your guests always wear one while on the water. See this brochure from the US Coast Guard to find an approved life jacket suitable for the type of boating you do.

Other helpful boat safety tips include knowing how to use your VHF radio in an emergency—this video from BoatUS demonstrates the basics. Also, check and see if you have flares and a fire extinguisher that are not out of date, and make sure you check the weather before heading out on the water.
